Boston-based singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler recently released her fourth studio album. "Little Hells" was released on the Kemado label. She recently took some time out of her busy tour schedule to tell us about her latest project. Thanks, Marissa!
Your music has been described as “intimate and melancholy". How do you describe your style and approach to making music?
Thank you. I would say those adjectives are accurate descriptions. My style is free and my approach is free.
Growing up, did you want to be a musician?
I thought that I was going to be a painter. I studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. Music was a hobby that became a need for me.
The album is called Little Hells. Why?
Its a term that I wrote to describe the little moments of personal strife in one's life. It came out of my head and I wrote it down. I googled it to make sure that there were no other albums named that and a geological phenomenon came up. Geysers of boiling water causing earthquakes.
One of my favorite songs is "River of Dirt". Do you have a favorite song on the record? Why?
My favorite is The Whole Is Wide right now. I am proud of the harmonies and the sonic change from my earlier work.
What was the overall tone you were going for on this record?
Dreamy.
Where did you do the recording?
We tracked at this studio called the Carriage House in Stamford CT. It was really really nice. There were living quarters upstairs, a kitchen, and a great beautiful studio with lots of wood beams. It was a fantastic place to record the record. They had dogs running around outside and it was summer and the sun was shining. It was lovely and a very fun time in my life.
Why did you go with producer Chris Coady?
He came recommended to me and I liked some of the bands that he has worked with ( Blonde Redhead, , Entrance, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). We really really hit it off musically, and like a lot of the same records. It was very fun to work with him and I intend on working with him in the future.
Top 3 bands or records that inspired you to start a band?
Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young.
Can you tell us about your touring instruments?
12 string Martin, 6 string taylor, goodtime banjo. I use a TC Helicon voice live unit for my vocal effects, and Boss pedals for my guitar effects.
What can you tell us about your favorite -
Guitars: I love Martins, Gibsons, Taylors. I would love a vintage Gibson guitar from the 60s.
Strings: I use whatever I can find.
Tunings: I use drop D a lot, DADGAD, open C major, the "annabelle tuning". I like to experiment.
Picks: I never use picks. I use the skin of my thumb and first finger. Its called Cotton picking.
Slides: I don't use a slide- yet.
Effects/Pedals: Boss Pedals right now. TC Helicon units.
What do you think of the new records you have heard so far this year?
I listen to mostly old music to be honest with you. But, I really like this Boston band Tulsa right now. Greg Weeks, Orion Rigel Dommisse, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter are a few I really dig.
What is one thing we would find on your nightstand?
Water.
